The building and development of teams is a critical part of modern business life. We all work in and are part of teams in all aspects of business, but how well do we perform? How much time and effort do we focus on making these teams successful? Think of the team you work in and how they have been pulled together.
- Do you and all the other team members understand why you have been brought together and what you are expected to achieve and by when?
- Do the team members understand their role and those of the other team members? Are the roles of those who are interfacing with the team understood?
- Do you communicate to one and other and those outside the team effectively?
- Do you make decisions effectively as a team?
- Do you manage conflict effectively?
- Are you all fully committed to the goals set?
- Do the team understand the consequences to the business, the team and themselves of success or failure?
- Have you been given the time and freedom to achieve the desired results?
In most case the answers to the above questions are NO. Teams are thrown together at the last minute to firefight a problem, are expected to solve problems while still carrying out an already busy schedule and are not briefed well enough to actually be able to solve the problem any way. Very little if any time is given over to planning, development of the team or the individuals. However if a team is mobilised correctly then the results can be staggering.
Successful teams exhibit certain characteristics such as:
- Each member understands the objectives for the team clearly and accept them
- There is clear open communications between the team – facts and feelings
- There is a feeling of interdependence between all members of the group
- Disagreement or conflict is resolved not buried
- Responsibility for success is shared by all
- There is respect between all team members and everyone takes part as much as possible
- Regular planning and reviews of the process and of progress are held
- Work load is shared as appropriate
In order to achieve these characteristics, however you must be either extremely lucky, have a great leader or spend some time developing as a team to make the above characteristics a reality.
We believe that we can develop groups to become highly successful teams through working with them on some basic team mobilisation principles that have been used by many of the worlds leading companies. This will not only provide the business with remarkable returns but will develop the individuals so that future team working is equally as productive.
